A Framework for Palliative Care
Health Canada has initiated a public consultation to collect input and ideas for the purpose of developing a framework on palliative care. This consultation will run for three months from May to July, 2018. During this time we will engage Canadians on themes like: advance care planning, person and family-centred care, access issues, special populations, health care provider training and supports, caregiver needs, and community engagement. Please bookmark this page and join us regularly. We hope that you join the discussion here, and then take it to your circle of family and friends. Palliative care will impact all of us at some point in our lives, so let’s start the conversation now.

Create networks, forums or communities of practice to support healthcare providers
Empower HCPs so that they can in turn better support individuals with life-limiting disease. Encourage conversations between professionals to get them talking more about palliative care and create networks within the different professions so that HCPs know where to turn to best support their patients/clients.

Protect the right to palliative care
In an overburdened health care system the prospect of the cost saving of lives ended through euthanasia can easily become a juggernaut causing a commensurate loss of palliative care services. I never want the day to come when I feel that I must end my life to avoid unconscionable suffering, but I fear that day is well on its way already.
