My Dad

My Dad passed away a number of years ago from cancer, which was in his brain and blood. Dad started getting headaches in September and by June he passed away. There wasn't any aggressive treatment; by the time the cancer was discovered it was too late. Essentially, pain management was the treatment. Lots of trips to the ER and hospitals. I clearly remember how tired Mom was and how tired I was from the hospital visits and the running back and forth to the doctors, etc. A few times we had to admit Dad to our local community hospital which we are fortunate enough to have, they have a lovely room set up for Palliative Care. In dad's case not so much for Palliative Care, but more so for respite for Mom to give her a few hours "off duty."

I was impressed with the staff at the QEII when Dad was first given the diagnosis. The nurse and the doctor were so excellent, not just with Dad but with the whole family. Anytime we went to emergency by ambulance I found the staff excellent. When we went ourselves to emergency, however, the wait was just nasty and the staff not so friendly.

I was not at all impressed with his family doctor from the get go. Dad suffered from hydrocephalus for months before he was even sent for a head scan - needless suffering. The only thing I found him good for was when Mom needed a break, he would admit him to the local hospital for respite.

When the end came, Dad was admitted to our local hospital again, to the Palliative Care Room. The support from staff was wonderful. His nurse was so kind. Dad was given a shot of morphine and passed away through the night. The staff even guided us in funeral arrangements.
